Massive profits aren’t actually common for cash loan lenders

The way critics talk about the cash advance and payday advance industry, one would think all lenders are wealthy. Picture them there; sitting atop mountains of cash. That isn’t really actually true at all. Short term personal loan lenders aren’t what they’re said to be. In fact, the typical payday advance lender doesn’t make a lot from loans. The margins for profit are actually quite slim. Lenders also have to find a way to make a living with stricter rules than almost any other industry.

Cash loan hard for making cash off of

Some assume lenders charging the fees they do would lead to outrageous profits. This is not necessarily the case. The Financial Services of America is a business organization that has lots of financial service providers that are on the member list. The auditing firm Ernst and Young did a study of the payday advance lenders that are members. The Ernst and Young study found out that only $1.22 was made as profit off of each $15.26 in revenue. That means there is only a 10 percent earning. Cash lenders generally have loans between $300 and $400. The fees on these are $15 to $20 which is much smaller.

Golf ending in a par

Studies are done on the payday lending industry for years. There was one common thing about them. Personal loan companies surveyed profited less than 8 percent, based on a Fordham Law Journal study by Aaron Huckstep. The largest payday lenders, such as Advance The United States, EZCORP and QC Holdings, only made about 10 percent according to other studies. A profit of merely 10 percent would certainly not support the surmised stereotype of payday store operators making cash hand over fist, like vultures picking clean the bleaching bones of the poor.

The simplest of economics being used

Some states impose caps on fees. Rate caps are price ceilings. To make money, lenders have to charge the perfect cap. This may even be done just to break even. Since a $15 fee means just more than $1 of profit, a lender has to charge the legal maximum just to keep their doors open. Are you interested in knowing more facts and statistics?
